About Tunisia

tunisian flagJust two and a half hours flying time from the UK, Tunisia is a small North African Country in the heart of the Mediterranean which is blessed with a stunning coastline, gorgeous sandy beaches, an abundance of historical sites and the magic of the Sahara desert. Many visitors have been drawn to Tunisia for its sunny climate and its bargain beach-resort holidays: the white sandy beaches are glorious, the sea a clear turquoise, and some of the resorts are among the best the Mediterranean has to offer.

However, this small country has so much more to offer, mostly within easy reach of the coast, and is now at last starting to promote it: friendly people, well-preserved whitewashed medinas, green forests in the north, a vast desert and lush oasis in the south, an amazing wealth of archaeological treasures inland, as well as an exciting and delicious cuisine, based on fresh local produce.

Tunisia is a mainstream holiday destination but it still attracts a lot of first time visitors to the country. Those Tunisia balcony viewthat visit tend to come back again and again each time absorbing more and more of the culture. In the mysterious medinas, there is the feeling that a thousand secrets lurk behind every studded door; shops and stalls in the souqs and surrounding streets spring to life to serve the homeward bound with the freshest food, goods and keepsakes.

Uniquely tourism in Tunisia has developed alongside tradition. Where many countries lose their appeal when catering for today's tourist in the construction of high rise ugly concrete boxing spoiling their coastlines, visitors to Tunisia will notice how five star modern hotels have are built to blend in with the existing surroundings.  Even purpose built whole resorts such as Port El Kantaoui have been purposely constructed on sites identified for their outstanding natural beauty, thereby embracing rather than destroying local culture and keeping themselves free of the "in your face" commercialism associated with other popular holiday destinations.

Tunisia is more prosperous than its neighbours and has strong trade links with Europe.  Agriculture employs a large part of the workforce, and dates and olives are cultivated in the drier regions.

Politics:

Tunisia has been relatively stable and prosperous under the leadership of President Ben Ali since 1987.

Economy:

The diverse economy has been growing steadily in recent years; Tunisia has been praised for halving its slum population.

International:

Tunisia has strong ties with the European Union; its peace-keepers have served in several conflict areas.
